Given the choice, most people would prefer a large car for a long journey. Provided, of course, that cost wasn't an obstacle. The CX 22TRS fills the bill very well, proving that a truly luxurious car isn't necessarily an expensive car. Although, in general, large cars are comfortable, even those in a higher price bracket can not equal the smoothness and safety inherent in the CX.
The CX's self levelling suspension simply soaks up bumps and holes in the roughest of surfaces. Just drive the CX 22TRS and you'll appreciate the confident way it sticks to the road, even on the very tightest of bends. The CX's Varipower steering is relatively high-geared reducing the effort required in tight manoeuvres - for safer driving in town and effortless parking.
Power comes from a light alloy OHC, 2165cc 115hp engine and together with a 5-speed gearbox powers the CX 22TRS from 0 to 60 in 10.5 seconds and on to its 116mph top speed. Not at the expense of economy either as 43mpg at a steady 56mph shows. Cold or damp weather starting won't be a problem thanks to the transistorised ignition. Simply for its exceptional engineering, the CX 22TRS represents outstanding value but it's far from spartan inside. The supportive seating is in an exclusive patterned cloth as are the door panels.
Head restraints are fitted front and rear. The car is carpeted throughout. Electric front windows glide open and shut whilst twin door mirrors are conveniently adjustable from inside, central door locking is by infra-red remote control, dashboard indicators warn if you've left the lights on, doors open or if the rear fog lamps fail. Other important details include the laminated windscreen with a single windsreen wash/wipe (two speeds plus intermittent), rear seat belts and a heated rear screen that auto-matically turns itself off.
