V8 SM.It was considered that the Maserati Quattroporte II and Merak were underpowered so Maserati were asked by Citroën to develop a new V8 engine which was tested in an SM mule. This car is a replica of that mule and is fitted with the original engine which spent many years in a collector's house. The V8 would seem to be a 3 litre V6 with an additional two cylinders added - which is odd since the SM and Merak engine was a V8 with two cylinders removed. |

| Above left and above right an example of the standard Maserati V8 engine used for more than 20 years from the 1960s through to the end of the 1980s. There were three versions - 412, 417 and 419 developing between 250 and 335 bhp. This engine bears little resemblance to the V8 prototype. | |
